Magazine inspiration for kitchen makeover

by Janet

IMG_1252 2

Delighted to be able to help a good friend with ideas for her kitchen makeover. Thankfully, our combined stash of interiors magazines proved just the ticket for inspiration. Not to mention an endless supply of tea and cake!

Having gone from: “Be honest” to “How honest?”, plenty of brainstorming, lots of laughter and frank discussion, we are finally there. The wall has been knocked down recently and the room has almost doubled in size. Now that my friend is armed with a host of ideas, I can’t wait to see her transformation.

If you’ve given a room in your home a fresh new look recently and would like to see the makeover featured in a magazine, drop me a line at mail@janetmcmeekin.co.uk

Thank you homeowners!

by Janet

photo

Altogether now…ahhhh! Delighted to receive this ultra-cute, and very timely, baby photograph from a proud homeowner and to catch up on news about her adorable new addition and super house.

Young (in fact, very young!) Idris made a rather dramatic, earlier than expected appearance, a few weeks ago but both mum and lovely little bundle are doing well.

Homeowners are such an important part of my job. It’s a privilege to meet so many fantastic people who love their homes and also to be made so very welcome in their houses.

When someone takes the time to drop a line or photograph about their latest house project or family event, or recommends me to write a feature about someone else’s home, it makes a wonderful job even more worthwhile. Thanks very much folks. 🙂

Frances is surprise star of The Great British Bake Off

by Janet

image001

What a tense 2013 Great British Bake Off final. Congratulations to Frances Quinn – definitely a star baker.

Her recipe for success ‘a dollop of randomness, teaspoon of wonder, pinch of eccentricity, drop of serendipity, handful of curiosity, fluid ounce of fun, all mixed together with quintessential quirkiness to produce a deliciously different bake,’ worked a treat last night, wooing the judges in style.

You just can’t beat the smell of freshly baked cakes in the home. My mother is a fantastic baker and, although I give it a go on a rare occasion, that overwhelming desire to bake has undoubtedly been handed down to my daughter who regularly produces delicious treats like these amazing raspberry cupcakes. Not overly good for the waistline, it must be said, but simply divine!

Getting in the mood with Susie Watson Designs

by Janet

IMG_9456Strolling into the brand new Susie Watson Designs store in Chichester a few months ago, the excitement in the air was palpable.

Animated staff were clearly (and understandably!) on a high about the fantastic ranges of classic contemporary fabrics and pottery, all beautifully displayed throughout the truly delightful two-storey shop.

In fact, the only thing that seemed in any way out of place in this haven for home-lovers was the slightly odd drilling noise coming from an area behind a wall jam-packed with Susie Watson paint pots. The mystery was solved when one of the bubbly assistants, who could hardly contain her enthusiasm, revealed: “The builders are just putting the finishing touches to a brand new craft and interior design centre.”

Weeks later, I received an email from Susie Watson Designs kindly inviting me along to one of their interior design courses with a focus on creating a mood board.

Well, wild horses couldn’t hold me back and on Monday morning I hotfooted it along to Susie Watson Designs and arrived to find the purpose-built craft and design centre now complete with large worktables, an array of smart sewing machines and plenty of space for courses as diverse as making a Christmas decoration to learning how to knit.

Heading up the session was Debbie Bailey, an experienced freelance interior designer, who instantly made Maureen, Valerie, Jennifer and me feel more than welcome in this now totally serene environment with not a drill in sight.

Within seconds, a slice of cake and steaming hot cup of coffee in a pretty Susie Watson mug (of course!) appeared, as we all discussed our reasons for coming on the interior design course and what we hoped to get out of it.

Before plundering the vast array of striking fabrics, trimmings and paints to create individual mood boards, Debbie offered sound advice about the importance of considering colour, pattern and shape, texture and aspect when creating a new scheme for any room in the house.

“Creating a mood board allows you to see the interplay between various elements in a room, in particular wall coverings and soft furnishings and to experiment before making a significant outlay,” Debbie explained.

“The Susie Watson range is particularly good and one of its enduring qualities is that it’s timeless. You can also keep on adding to it over the years to ring the changes.”

After listening to Debbie’s decorating tricks and tips, we were fired up and ready to roll.

With so many fabulous fabrics and combinations to choose from, I have to confess that suddenly I felt just like a child in a sweetshop – slightly bamboozled as to where on earth to start with my imaginary scheme. However, a stylish sofa covered in a duck egg and ivory thick weave cotton was calling to me and, before long, I was dashing around the store gathering a selection of fabrics for my mood board.

It was amazing to watch all the different schemes coming together, reflecting the different personalities of the participants. Living room and dens were the order of the day and we all worked together, bouncing ideas off Debbie and each other to come up with a range of fabulous mood boards.

We all agreed that we’d got a lot out of the course and the ladies just can’t wait to make their schemes a reality.

For more information about the courses click here Susie Watson Designs or call the Chichester store on 01243 788084.

Country house stars on front cover of 25 Beautiful Homes

by Janet

So delighted that 25 Beautiful Homes have chosen Sharon Harvey’s cosy drawing room to star on the cover of this month’s magazine!

Sharon and I instantly clicked when we met each other over a pot or two of Annie Sloan paint during a fantastic workshop at Ivory & Pitch in Westbourne a few months ago.

It was a pleasure to visit Sharon’s beautiful country home in Hampshire with photographer Richard Gadsby and great to receive her feedback:

‘Feel free to use us again for a photo shoot. Both you and Richard made it a fun experience.’

Way back at the start of the summer, I blogged about a beautiful flint and brick home in West Sussex with a pretty stable door. Well, Sheila Schapiro’s adorable mews house is also featured in the November issue of 25 Beautiful Homes and she is equally thrilled!

Sheila, who works in interior design, has transformed an unloved mews house into a truly elegant home with a heart. It’s another super house with a lovely feel, as you’ll see from the shots in the magazine that were taken by photographer Bruce Hemming, and definitely worthy an appearance in a national magazine.

If, like these lovely ladies, you fancy seeing your home or room makeover on the pages of an interiors magazine just give me a call on 01243 792379 or drop an email to mail@janetmcmeekin.co.uk

To contact Sheila Schapiro for advice about interior design, ring her on 01243 776750.

West Dean College rocks!

by Janet

IMG_1154

Great buzz up at the Grow! Cook! Eat! event at West Dean College in West Sussex over the weekend. Cooking legend Mary Berry was the main attraction with a vast number of fans turning out to catch a glimpse of the Great British Bake Off star in action.

Another crowd puller was the country singing duo Ward-Thomas – twin sisters Lizzy and Catherine were just amazing.

Fab time! I’m definitely keeping the weekend of December 14/15th free for West Dean’s Christmastime event which is already shaping up to be a festive delight.

New England-style home to feature in Country Homes & Interiors

by Janet

IMG_4317

Morning all – hope you had a super weekend. Part of mine was spent interviewing for a forthcoming Country Homes & Interiors feature about a wonderful New England-style home.

The shoot is happening today and I’ve no doubt that Monty, the owner’s Labradoodle, will be taking centre stage. He’s gorgeous and an incredibly photogenic pooch!

Shattered hopes restored

by Janet

Ever hunted high and low to find that ‘Holy Grail’ item for your home? If so, then you’ll know where I’m coming from with this story…thankfully one with a happy ending.

A few months ago, an artist friend and I had a wonderful day pottering around the Village-Vintage Fair in Plumpton, East Sussex. The sun shone, the stalls were fabulous and the friendly stallholders more than helpful. We returned to the car, laden with some very special finds (pictured above).

My treasures included this lovely vintage jar with a green-tinge – perfect for my current bedroom makeover project.

All was well until, one gusty day, a piece of flint positioned rather precariously on a cupboard above, fell down, smashing said gorgeous jar to smithereens. It wasn’t a good look.

Feeling a tad miffed, I contacted the stallholder, who reassured me she’d a few similar jars in stock.  Problem was, she was based in Lewes – 42 miles away.

Biding my time to tie the jar-hunting mission in with a work trip, I found myself in Lewes towards the end of last week and popped into the shop where the original stallholder sells some of her lovely wares. Unfortunately, the jars were either too big or too small. Having scoured virtually every nearby antique shop, I’d resigned myself to either searching further afield or having a total rethink about what would look just as good in the corner that was earmarked for the jar.

As I wandered around my last port of call, No 1 Lewes (pictured below), a beautiful antiques shop on the bridge in Cliffe High Street, nothing was jumping out in a green glassy way. However, being the chatty type, I happened to mention my quest to Liz and Lily who commented: “Have you seen our glass jars at the back of the store yet?”

Well, ten paces later, I’d finally found the Holy Grail. There were loads of glass jars of exactly the right height ready to be purchased.

With the jar carefully wrapped and ready to be taken home by its new owner, I waltzed back to the car feeling chuffed to bits. The jar has been crammed full of fresh flowers and is looking just dandy. Thanks to all concerned for your help!

Winter’s Moon at The London Design Festival

by Janet

1240446_506052826147968_413825403_n

I’m a big fan of Chichester-based Winter’s Moon and delighted that they’ve been invited by Thornback & Peel to showcase their bright and breezy range as part of The London Design Festival, running until this Sunday, September 22.

If you get a chance, pop into their shop at 7 Rugby Street, London, WC1N 3QT, and take a look at their vintage inspired homewares and mid-century furniture, upholstered in delightful Thornback & Peel hand-printed fabrics.

Oh, and if you happen to bump into Julia Grant, the bubbly owner of Winter’s Moon, say hi from me.
