Home is where the heart is

by Janet

1330599505662--1A few years ago I was invited to a dark neglected cottage in West Sussex that had just been bought by a lovely couple I’d met while writing a feature about their previous home.

Although the exterior of the property was very attractive, inside it was a completely different matter. This was an unloved house, in dire need of a total renovation and heaps of TLC.

Well, I’m absolutely thrilled to discover that thanks to the owners’ vision, energy and enthusiasm, the cottage dating from 1511 – yep, 1511 – has been modernised perfectly and is now simply enchanting.

No stone has been left unturned and attention to detail blasts out loud and clear from, for instance, the pretty lampshade made by the owner to match the Roman blind in this striking Adam’s Eden fabric from Lewis & Wood, to a pair of beautifully framed photographs taken by a talented friend.

Personality oozes from every nook and cranny of this lovingly restored home which, once again, has a heart that’s beating loud and clear. The cottage is a true delight and I can’t wait to hear the full story about the owners’ amazing journey.

If you’re renovating or building a home and would love it to be featured in a magazine too then drop a line to mail@janetmcmeekin.co.uk. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks very much to everyone who has taken the time to pop over to my Facebook and Twitter pages. Have a good day! 🙂

Bold and bright start to 2014

by Janet

100085_1

Wow…what a fantastic start to the year. Almost half way through January and my feet have hardly touched the ground – just inundated with beautiful homes of all shapes, styles and sizes, plus owners keen to have their properties featured in various magazines.

Today I’m finishing an article about innovative homeowner Emma King’s stunning Victorian terrace in Southampton, Hampshire. Plucky Emma decided to go for it, painting her living room in Farrow & Ball’s bold and bright Oval Room Blue. It looks fab teamed alongside gorgeous home accessories from Emerald Nest and Outpost – stores that are definitely worth checking out. I’ll be writing more about both soon…

Hope your 2014 is shaping up to be a great one!

Meet the author of Theo’s Future

by Janet

IMG_1338 copy

Oh, I love moments like this! After standing in the local post office queue for ages waiting to send an urgent special delivery, I decided to buy a ‘surprise!’ book that a relative had hinted they fancied for Christmas.

Now, this is no ordinary book. It’s been written by Mike Brooke, (pictured above) who sailed around Britain on a 19-foot boat called Theo’s Future, to raise money for crucial research that might help his blind godson, Theo, to gain his sight.

So, there I was standing in yet another long queue in a different part of the post office, asking the assistant for Theo’s Future when, a tall gentleman right behind me said: “I’m the author…would you like me to sign it?”. Well, talk about serendipity. How lovely.

I now have a signed book, wrapped and under the Christmas tree and, having flicked through the first few pages, I have to say that I’m very keen to read it too.

The book is priced £12.95 and more details are available by browsing www.theosfuture.org

Bunting kits make great Christmas gifts for any home

by Janet

IMG_9641[1] copy

Morning all…I wonder if you’d be kind enough to promote this Christmas present idea – one that’s rather close to my heart!

A couple of months ago, my daughter Louisa (right of the picture below) and her school friends were frantically trying to come up with an idea for their Young Enterprise challenge.

After loads of brainstorming, energy, enthusiasm and considerable effort, the team called Spark, has come up with Let’s Make Bunting, a bunting kit with a difference.

Each colourful kit, costing £7.50, comprises two metres of bunting, eight flags made from recycled material, 15 buttons, and instructions – all in one handy box.

I think these young people deserve a little support so, if you know of anyone who’d love a Let’s Make Bunting kit then email o.tunmore@hotmail.com. For more information check out Spark’s Twitter feed @EnterpriseSpark and Instagram @SparkEnterprise.

Please feel free to share, Retweet, follow and so on…thanks very much. 🙂

Creatures of Chichester is perfect stocking filler

by Janet

launch nov13 036

Happy Friday! Many thanks for all the new Facebook likes and Twitter follows, particularly during this hectic run up to Christmas – what a great start to the day.

With Christmas in mind, I’ve just snapped up a super book for a certain young nephew that’s been written by Christopher Joyce – a talented author who is based not far from me, in Chichester, West Sussex.

This is Christopher’s second book in the Creatures of Chichester series and I reckon it’s going to be a hit with both nephew and parents alike!

For more information view www.creaturesofchichester.com or pop over to Christopher’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/creaturesofchichester.
